BONUS ROUND: METHODS OF DOCUMENTATION AND MEASURED DRAWINGS

The objective of this project is to train students to be observant to their surrounding and instil the culture of documenting as part of the learning process in architectural education.
Besides that, it also enhance the students’ graphic communication skills in capturing important details and the spirit of the place.

Project 02: Measured Drawings

Introduction
This project is to produce a set of measured drawings of the selected historical buildings or structures in the selected location. A report is needed to contain the important of historical information of the buildings and it will complement the drawings as well. It is an on-site exercise where students are required to execute fieldwork and hands-on measurement exercise.

Task
2 Set of A1 sized drawings (one with dimension and one without dimensions)
2 Set of A3 sized drawings (both without dimensions)
(a) Key Plan
(b) Location Plan
(c) Site Plan incorporation the Roof Plan
(d) Floor Plans
(e) Elevations
(f) Sections
(g) Site Sections
(h) Exploded Isometric/ Axonometric
(i) A physical model to show the construction/ structure of the buildings using ONLY balsa wood OR white boards as either one section OR an open-able full model.
(j) Details of Construction, Architectural, Decorative Elements/ Ornaments (min. one each)

Project 03: Report & Video on Measured Building

Introduction
The report of this project is a document that accompanied the set of drawings for the selected building. Basically, the report will elaborate on the significance of the building being measured from various aspects such as architectural, historical and cultural. In this report, students are required to relate the architecture of the building to its significance, highlighting how the two support the inhabitation of the building. A video documenting the building is required to provide 3D experience of the building.

Task
(a) Report (3000 to 6000 words)
(b) 3 CDs to include the soft copy of the report, the presentation slide, the presentation recording, 50 photos of the building and the video.

Reflections:
The practicing of on-site drawing rekindled the appreciation of fully manual, hand drawn sketches, this assignment practice reminds us the fundamental essence of basic design communication that all of us have to master through time and training, with patients in details and renderings.

The drawing team did an awesome job in conducting the site measurements, even though the building is obviously crooked with its precarious structure holding the building intact. They highlighted some of the key elements of the building of us students to analyse and understand, which is very helpful to the report team eventually. Back in the studio, another awesome job from the modelling team with the completion of the scaled model of our building.

With me under the Video + Report team, it felt good to actually understand the progressive styles and build methods through time. But interviewing from one person to another thought me something crucial: That knowledge is key of preservation, and communication is the medium. To quote from George Santayana: "Those who do not know history's mistakes are doomed to repeat them." The interviewees warned us about the progressive arrogance of shop house owners' lack of preservation knowledge and the continue activity of destroying/neglecting the details of our past glory. If this goes on, Penang will soon lose its essence. As soon-to-be architects, I believe it's in our blood to spread the information and the importance of preservation of Penang/Melaka shop houses to the public. It may be a small gesture, but in a long run it's well worth the effort.
