Architectural Design Studio IIA: Diagrammatic Abstraction

It  begins, our second semester is now a go. Things are a little different now, a little serious and a little tense for most of us. But I got a feeling this is just the beginning of a 2 years hellfire suffering under satan's demonic toenail.

Our first assignment starts of rather small, literally. In a group of 5, we were randomly place under a famous architect and their famous works, then produce 10 diagrammatic abstraction models of the building.

We got the Swiss architect, urbanist and interior designer 'Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, better known under his nom de plume of Le Corbusier and his(technically designed by Iannis Xenakis) Philips Pavilion.
Firstly, a introduction video is created to give a heads up of our group's selected building to our classmates. The video consists of its inspirations, elements and its last fate till the end.

With the video introduction, we then proceed on drawing out its orthographic drawings and creating the 10 diagrammatic abstraction models of the Philips Pavilion. In the end we chose to showcase these 10 interesting studies:

  • Parti
  • Spaces
  • Rhythmic Repetition
  • Structural Equilibrium
  • Circulation
  • Emphasis
  • Massing
  • Light Penetrations
  • Form
  • Volume

It was quite fun actually, able to produce 10 small conceptual models, knowing each of them are related to your selected building. During our final presentation of this assignment, we placed a secondary video animation, and produced a booklet explaining each of the models' concepts and elements.
