Architectural Design Studio IC: Dreamscape for the Self

In this project, students will be required to consider all those aspects (subjective and objective parameters) at the same time in designing a space. Going through this exercise students will get the real essence of how architectural design will start from a notion and develop through a process affected by multiple forces.

In part A, students with a group will work on exploring several design principles, materializing some meanings and ‘reading’ architectural designs in a series of design tasks and studio based group exercises. In Part B, individually, we will start designing a dream space for a celebrity or a VIP.

For part A, Jason Lee and I chose to study the elements of vertically with the PJ trade center as our main building. We climbed over gated walls, sneaked pass the security guards and CCTV to study the spaces at the higher floor. Well not exactly, but it is a private area as just right after our little study trip, the guards came and said taking photos is strictly prohibited in this area, you got to pay RM150 per hour if you wish to do so. We gathered our sketches and notes and concluded into a simple hand drawn presentation board.

For part B, the client I chose is my geeky astrophysicist that brought swag back into science idol: Neil deGrasse Tyson. Intensive background study is needed to understand a person's personally, character and his past experiences. I do understand that Neil. D Tyson is a high profile astrophysicist, but during his younger days he was also quite a active guy in terms of body movement. He was a team captain of his high school wrestling team and also a gold medalist Latin ballroom dancer too! A mixture of both passive and active lifestyle, the best of both worlds.

Inspired by the stories of "Tower of Babel" where the people cooperate, using a single language to build a tower so high that it can reach the heavens. But God forbid men to enter, so he created languages to confuse men, thus the Tower of Babel named is formed. Back to reality, Neil. D Tyson has a similar ambition of unlocking the secrets of the stars, but using a language that all men understands, Science.

Combining his lifestyle, his ambition, and peeling architecture that my tutor Mr. James insisted me to analyse its formation of spaces, I present: Erudition:
